Sandra Bullock on Women in Hollywood: 'We Still Have Some Ways to Go'
When Sandra Bullock wants a role, she goes for it.
The actress stars as a political strategist in Our Brand Is Crisis, a part originally written for a man. (Pal George Clooney, one of the film's producers, was reportedly up for the role).
In a time when, generally, more leading roles are written for men and men make more money, Bullock opened up about how women fare in Hollywood today.
"There's so much talk of that right now, and it's getting heightened, which makes me very happy," the actress, 51, told reporters Saturday at a press conference for the movie at the Toronto International Film Festival. "What I'd like to comment on is the fact that I was able to say: 'Would you be able to take a role that was written and that you guys have worked on and cherished a long time and change it to a female?'" she added.
"And there was not a lot of hesitation. The only hesitation was: Can the writer do it? So that, hopefully, shows a shift in the climate for women in film. We still have some climbing to do."
Bullock also noted that she and costar Zoe Kazan had discussed the hot-button topic as well, noticing the leaps and bounds being made for female characters on cable and Netflix.
"I'd like to throw that onto the heap as well, because there have been massive changes there. We still have some ways to go, but I don't mind being the one to ask, 'What do you got that you haven't made yet, that you'd be willing to change for me?'" said Bullock.
"And hopefully, I mean, what would be very helpful was if this film has a level of success that makes the studio go: Okay, this is a viable thing for us. We want to make more of this for women out there. Hopefully those worlds will come together."

While Billy belted out his hit “Uptown Girl,” the pair kicked off their shoes, climbed onto Billy’s piano, and danced on top of it together, recalling moments from Schumer’s blockbuster hit film, Trainwreck.
The two spent the whole day getting ready for the big night, rehearsing with Billy hours before the concert in the empty venue.
It seems A.Schu and J.Law (SchuLaw?) have been spending a lot of time together recently. Jen joined Amy and her friends for a getaway in the Hamptons a few weeks ago, complete with human pyramids and jet skis. On Wednesday, Lawrence revealed to the New York Times that she and Amy have written a comedic screenplay together and plan to co-star as sisters.
“Amy and I were creatively made for each other,” she told the paper. “We have different flavors. It’s been the most fun experience of my life. We start the day off on the phone, laughing. And then we send each other pages. And we crack up. I’m flying out tomorrow to see her in Chicago. We’ll write a little bit with her sister, Kim, who worked with Amy when she was writing Trainwreck."

The 21 year old appeared on The Tonight Show Wednesday night but before he sat down with Jimmy Fallon to talk about crying at the VMAs, Justin showed off his skateboarding tricks outside Radio City Music Hall in New York.
Wearing Yeezy sneakers, ripped jeans, and a long-sleeved shirt that he wore half-on and half-off — baring his abs and Calvin Klein underwear — the Biebs wowed the crowd with his skills. At one point, the singer even asked to see a fan’s photo of himself in action.
Earlier this week, Bieber was spotted leaving a Los Angeles nightclub with his board and he even incorporated skating into his latest lyric music video for “What Do You Mean."

Jessica Simpson dropped a bit of a bomb about her first marriage to Nick Lachey Thursday during an interview with Kelly Evans on CNBC’sClosing Bell Monday. The singer turned fashion mogul made an appearance on the show to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her wildly successful clothing brand.
When Kelly asked the 35-year-old to identify her biggest financial mistakes so far, the mom of two replied, “The biggest money mistakes? I don’t know. For some reason I thought of my first marriage!” Yikes!
Jessica may have been thrown a bit by the question, but her answer certainly shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. She and Lachey did not have a prenuptial agreement and, in the state of California, that means the pair had to split their assets equally. Seeing as Simpson was making about seven times as much money as her ex at the time, one could certainly describe her divorce — or, at least, her lack of prenup — as a “mistake."
The singer later added that she and her business manager of 16 years have made some great investments over the years, making very few mistakes but still taking risks. "I’m definitely a person that is all about taking a risk and everything to me is kind of a ‘why not?’ I take an opportunity by the reigns and just go for it,” Simpson explained. “When we started, it was only shoes and now it’s grown so big. I’m just counting my blessings.”

Justin Bieber Reflects on Past Mistakes
Have faith, Beliebers! Justin Bieber has had a tumultuous few years in the spotlight, but he’s getting back to business with new music and a new attitude. The “Home to Mama” singer, 21, sat down recently with radio host Elvis Duran to talk about his latest song, “What Do You Mean?” — and only Us Weekly has a sneak peek of their chat, which airs Friday, Aug. 28, at 7:40 a.m. on Elvis Duran and the Morning Show.
Bieber has been working hard to improve his image in recent months, as evidenced by his February apology video and his March Comedy Central Roast, where he gamely endured teasing from the likes of Martha Stewart, Snoop Dogg, Shaquille O'Neal, and Will Ferrell. Behind the scenes, he’s also focused on weeding out negative influences.
“I just want to be around people who I feel are supporting me, uplifting me, and making sure I’m the best version of myself because there are so many people in this industry who just want to keep seeing me fall,” he told Duran.
Building a good support system is easier said than done, though. “It has to be on you. You have to make the conscious effort, because for me, so many times it was good people coming in my life and tugging at me, but I wasn’t ready,” he explained. “They’re like, ‘Justin, come on.’ But I wasn’t ready to take that leap and be like, 'Okay, this is what I want to change, this is who I am, and this is not who I am.’ It takes moments of clarity to be like, 'Oh, that’s why I’m not like this. That’s why I shouldn’t do this.’”
Bieber says those moments of clarity only come from experience, and from being allowed to make your own mistakes. “I mean, maybe I’m a bad influence, but for me I was like, no, I’m going to do this until I feel like I shouldn’t be doing this. Maybe I was wrong, but that’s how I learn, and I feel like I’m much better for it,” he explained.
Looking back on his past controversies, he quipped, “Would I do anything different? I would probably stay away from Miami.” (Miami is where the pop star was arrested in January 2014 for careless driving and resisting arrest.)
Joking aside, Bieber told Duran he’s learned he needs to careful about where he puts his faith. “Trusting people is hard, especially for me. I’ve trusted people who I probably shouldn’t have trusted before and they’ve hurt my heart,” he admitted to Duran. “I’m a pretty sensitive guy, so I’ll lay it all on the line, and they’ll kind of pull it. So now I’m figuring out there’s certain people I can’t do that with.”
That said, he doesn’t want to become someone who’s suspicious of everyone he meets. “Here’s what I’ll tell the people: Don’t let someone who ruined your trust ruin that next person’s chance to gain that trust. I think I let that affect me and change the way I looked at people for a while,” he shared.
“There’s so many beautiful and amazing people who will encourage you, who will love you, who will not judge you. But I didn’t see that because I completely put myself over here,” he continued. “I still have moments where I’m like, 'Yeah people suck.’ And then I’ll have those moments of like, 'No, people are awesome, and this is why I do what I do in the first place.’”
The singer — who previously dated Selena Gomez for several years — also revealed to Duran that he has a new leading lady in his life. “Yes. I am in love…Her name is Esther, she’s my little puppy!” he teased. “She’s adorable. She’s a silky terrier. She makes me smile.”
Miley Cyrus Calls Out Nicki Minaj for Starting ‘Pop Star War’ Over VMA Nominations
Miley Cyrus didn’t hold back saying how she really felt about Nicki Minaj.
In July, Minaj went on a Twitter rant about how “Anaconda” was snubbed for a Video of the Year nomination at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, as well as her and Beyonce’s song “Feeling Myself.”
“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year,” she tweeted. “If I was a different ‘kind’ of artist, 'Anaconda’ would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.”
She also accused the VMAs of body shaming, posting that “black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.”
Cyrus, who is hosting Sunday’s VMAs, tells the New York Times that Minaj went about this all wrong.
“If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself,” the 22-year-old singer said. “Say: 'This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type.’”
Cyrus claims that Minaj lost focus of the issue at hand. “You made it about you. Not to sound like a b**ch, but that’s like, 'Eh, I didn’t get my VMA.’”
When Minaj started in on her VMA Twitter rant this past July, Taylor Swift, a Video of the Year nominee, took the attack personal, tweeting: “I’ve done nothing but love and support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”
Swift later apologized to Minaj, saying she “missed the point” of the tweets – but Cyrus still isn’t supporting the “Starships” rapper.
She even questioned Minaj’s character.
“What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love,” Cyrus told The Times. “You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about.”
The former Hannah Montana star also took notice of what people may think about her speaking out on the subject.
“I know you can make it seem like, 'Oh I just don’t understand because I’m a white pop star,’” she said. “I know the statistics. I know what’s going on in the world. But to be honest, I don’t think MTV did that on purpose.”
As for who she’s rooting for on Sunday, Cyrus admitted that she’s not too familiar with the nominees’ music. “I like what Kendrick [Lamar] does. I don’t really know many of these,” she confessed. “I don’t really listen to this music. I’m probably the most disconnected host in history. I don’t have TV. I have Apple TV. I’m so the 22-year-old that’s like, 'Who’s TV?’”

Johnny Depp stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday, and discussed the legal trouble he and his wife Amber Heard are currently dealing with because they illegally brought their dogs along on a film shoot in Australia. Depp seemed to be pretty understanding about the whole fiasco, despite the Australian Minister of Agriculture’s snide remarks like, “Mr Depp has to either take his dogs back to California or we’re going to have to euthanize them…even though (he’s) been the world’s sexiest man twice, so it’s time that Pistol and Boo buggered off.” However Depp didn’t mince words when it came to the possibility that the AMA could could have Amber thrown in jail, saying, “If they did that I would just fly to Australia and assault that man.”

Has Jennifer Lopez ever not looked totally, undeniably smokin’ hot? At 46, she might have the longest sexy streak of, well, anyone ever. And her latest photos, from the set of her new music video for “El Mismo Sol,” a bilingual duet with Spanish singer-songwriter Álvaro Soler currently available on iTunes, are no exception.
Wearing gladiator sandals and a flowing, boho chic dress — cut down-to-there in the front with slits up-to-there to show off her pins — the look recalls that infamous Versace gown she donned for the Grammys 15 years ago. He’s not the Lawrence brother known for saying “whoa,” but Matthew is the one who’s making us say it today. The now 35-year-old younger brother of ‘Blossom's’ Joey bared his buff bod while out walking his dog in L.A. on Monday.
Of course, the middle Lawrence brother was the star of another popular ‘90s show, ‘Boy Meets World,’ on which he played the older half-brother of Shawn (portrayed by Rider Strong) and the best friend of Eric Matthews (played by Will Friedle).
Matthew obviously has not been slacking when it comes to his workouts since then. Good thing, since just last month he reprised his role on the current ‘Boy Meets World’ spinoff, ‘Girl Meets World.’
Might we suggest a spinoff of that? ‘Boy Meets Gym’would be very cheap to produce: just Matthew doing sit-ups and pumping weights. Audio wouldn’t even be necessary!
In case no one snaps up that idea, those looking to see more of Matthew can find him in the movie ‘Evol: The Theory of Love’ with Alexis Dziena.
Unfortunately, it does not appear to be set on the beach.
